Form 2290 Explained: When and How Truckers File the HVUT

Published October 21, 2026

Form 2290 is the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax every heavy truck owner files each year. Here is who owes it, the deadline, and how Test Pro files it for you.

Form 2290 — the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, or HVUT — is a federal tax that trips up a lot of new truck owners. You need the stamped Schedule 1 to register your truck, so getting it filed on time matters. Here's the short version.

Who Has to File Form 2290

You file Form 2290 with the IRS if you register a heavy highway vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more in your name. That covers most tractors and many straight trucks. Vehicles that run fewer than 5,000 miles a year (7,500 for agricultural vehicles) still file but can claim a suspension from the tax.

The Tax Year and Deadline

The HVUT tax period runs July 1 through June 30. For a truck you already have in service, Form 2290 is due by August 31 each year. If you put a new truck on the road mid-year, the 2290 is due the last day of the month after the month you first used it.

What You Get Back — and Why It Matters

When the IRS accepts your 2290, you receive a stamped Schedule 1. You need that stamped Schedule 1 to:

  • Register the truck or renew your plates (IRP)
  • Prove payment at the DMV or licensing office
  • Keep your operation legal at the scales

No stamped Schedule 1 means you can't get your tags — which is why a late or missing 2290 stops your truck cold.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Form 2290 due? For trucks already in service, the 2290 is due by August 31 each year. For a newly purchased truck, it's due the last day of the month following the month you first used it on the road.

What is the stamped Schedule 1 used for? The stamped Schedule 1 is your proof the HVUT was paid. You need it to register the truck and renew your plates — without it, the licensing office won't issue tags.

Can Test Pro file my 2290 the same day? In most cases yes. We e-file the 2290 and return your stamped Schedule 1 quickly so you can register or renew without delay.
